Fixed Sampling

  • The Bay Air Center team has installed 14 sites distributed across locations surrounding the five refineries, which is shown on the fixed sampling map here: Fixed Sampling Map
  • The team collects samples on a bi-weekly basis and sends them to the laboratory for analysis.
  • The laboratory analysis provides information on particle characteristics including particle type, shape, and size that could indicate potential sources.

Responsive Sampling

  • The Bay Air Center team is continuing to refine tape lift protocols to ensure they align with the Air District’s response procedures for incidents.
  • The team is developing responsive sampling training materials and take-home supply kits for responsive sampling training with Workgroup members.
  • Community members outside of the Workgroup will be recruited as volunteers for responsive sampling.

Community Workgroup

The Community Workgroup convened on September 9, 2025. Since then, five Workgroup meetings have been held on topics such as:

  • Overview of the Particle Fallout Sampling Program for Refinery Communities
  • Workgroup responsibilities and roles, meeting formats, operating protocols and ground rules, and the anticipated schedule and work plan
  • Particle deposition sampling and monitoring technology
  • Sampler siting, siting locations, and recommendations
  • Responsive sampling, tape-lift protocols and procedures, and training
  • Overview of laboratory reports and optical and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses
