Project Overview
Climate Action Pathways for Schools (CAPS) is a James Cary Smith Community Grant recipient working in partnership with the Morgan Hill Unified School District to hire and train high school students to lead sustainability projects in the district and beyond. This collaboration encompasses environmental justice and city planning work to establish, with the City of Morgan Hill, the City’s first Environmental Justice Element. In collaboration with CAPS, the Bay Air Center developed and delivered an interactive workshop for the high school interns. The workshop was designed to provide student leaders with foundational air quality knowledge to inform their climate action projects related to building electrification, sustainable governments, and waste management.
The workshop strengthened interns’ understanding of pollution sources, key pollutants affecting Morgan Hill, and actions individuals, communities, and government can take to improve air quality. Students also used tools such as CalEnviroScreen to see how air quality and environmental justice intersect in their community. Thirteen student interns participated in the workshop and will carry this knowledge forward into their year-long internship projects.
