About

Working together for clean air

A new resource for communities conducting air monitoring.

The Air District recognizes that shared leadership where community members, local organizations, local governments, and the Air District work together to achieve better outcomes is an effective and appropriate approach for reducing exposure to air pollution in neighborhoods most impacted by poor air quality. This approach has been a natural evolution of the many partnerships the Air District has created with communities in the Bay Area, and it is embodied in the District’s approach to implementing Assembly Bill 617. The Air District also recognizes the need for strong technical partnerships that are designed to provide support for communitybased organizations to conduct air monitoring and participate in the AB 617 process.

Shared leadership centers community perspective and knowledge, and it provides for unique communityled solutions to reduce air pollution. It also requires equitable access to information and tools so that communities can respond to issues that matter to them in culturally relevant and appropriate ways. The Bay Air Center was designed to address this need.

The Bay Air Center is working with community members and organizations to provide technical support for communityled air monitoring projects and increase access to information, tools, and knowledge about air quality in general. The Bay Air Center is a resource for technical knowledge, informational resources, and personalized training and assistance. Communities can use the Bay Air Center to explore air quality and the factors that influence it, understand the health impacts of changes in air quality, and get technical help with a range of services.

The Bay Air Center is guided by the following principles

  • Empower the community with knowledge, guidance, and resources.
  • Provide technically and scientifically sound support.
  • Respond quickly to inquiries and information requests.
  • Partner with the Bay Area community to ensure the Center provides valued services.
  • Operate efficiently and adapt to changing needs.
  • Promote knowledge sharing across community groups.
  • Track new technologies and methods and share this knowledge with the community.
