Sustainable Silicon Valley’s SmartTA Project in East Palo Alto

Project Overview

In April 2019, Sustainable Silicon Valley (SSV), a nonprofit “think and do tank,” received funding from the Bay Area Air Quality Management District to support Net Positive Communities-East Palo Alto (NPC). This program aims to improve the local environment, health and quality of life of residents of East Palo Alto, a historically low- income, impacted and vulnerable community which experiences significant environmental burdens.

SSV developed the Smart Traffic Analytics (SmartTA) project to enhance the understanding of air quality in the area by monitoring local air quality along heavily trafficked corridors. The SmartTA project included the following tasks: (1) acquired, tested, and deployed air sensors, (2) collected and managed data, (3) conducted community outreach, and (4) analyzed and reported to the community. SSV staff measured particulate matter and several gasses and related the pollution levels to traffic patterns.

Testimonial

We were very satisfied with Bay Air Center’s support. The advent of low-cost sensors means more communities will want to take measurements upon themselves. The Air District is smart to get ahead of the curve and provide assistance to communities with the Bay Air Center.
