Vallejo Citizen Air Monitoring Network

Project Overview

The Citizen Air Monitoring Network – Vallejo (VCAMN) started in 2016 and has established more than 25 air monitoring sites around Vallejo. These air monitors provide real-time measurement of particulate matter (PM) as indicators of local air quality.

The independent citizen volunteers of VCAMN serve as local air monitoring experts, presenting at community events, and fostering civic engagement. They seek to strengthen the ability of the community to respond to air pollution and improve public health.

The Bay Air Center helped VCAMN with their placement of air monitors and taught local community members how to use air pollution data to identify sources. Additionally, the Bay Air Center developed an open-source program to download and process data from the VCAMN network. This program made it possible to process thousands of air sensor data points and generated summary spreadsheet files for access by VCAMN and interested community members.
