The Bay Area Air Quality Management District offered an Air District School Community Grant Program to encourage collaborative partnerships between the Air District and school communities to reduce air pollution and increase knowledge of air quality. In 2019, these school grants funded non-technical activities such as carpool educational campaigns, air quality monitoring efforts, and environmental justice community engagement projects. The Bay Air Center provided scientific and technical support to grantees.
Specifically, the Bay Air Center provided an introductory seminar on air quality 101 and air measurements. Air Quality 101 covered major pollutants and their health effects, pollutant lifecycles, and details about major pollutants. The air measurements segment of the seminar covered air sensor use: how to deploy them and understanding the data they collect. In addition to this technical seminar, the Bay Air Center created space for a Q&A and provided tailored feedback and consultation services to schools using air sensors.
